When I think about breath taking places in British Columbia to elope, one location rises above them all.

HOW TO GET TO TOFINO FOR YOUR DREAM COASTAL ELOPEMENT

When it comes to eloping in BC, few places rival the raw beauty and romantic seclusion of Tofino. This small surf town on the west coast of Vancouver Island is an ideal destination for couples seeking an intimate and adventure-filled elopement surrounded by lush rainforests, misty beaches, and wild Pacific Ocean views. But how exactly do you get to this remote paradise? Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to Tofino by ferry or plane – including approximate costs and travel times – to help you plan the perfect BC elopement getaway.

There are two ways to get to Tofino if you are travelling in from Vancouver, BC. And both are very easy and affordable for couples looking to elope in this destination in British Columbia.

Flying to Tofino is one of the options. And I would recommend flying in if you’re short on time or simply want an stress-free journey, flying is the quickest and most direct way to get to Tofino. The aerial views are to die for as you fly in as well.

You can fly out of Vancouver South Terminal at YVR. This little airport is super cute and they have a lovely restaurant called the Flying Beaver Bar & Grill that you can stop get a wicked meal and a cocktail or beer if that is your thing before catching your flight over to Tofino.

Airlines: Pacific Coastal Airlines and Cascadia Air offer direct flights from Vancouver (YVR) to Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ).

Flight Time: Approximately 1 hour.

Cost: Around $150–$300 CAD per person, depending on the season and how early you book.

When you arrive in Tofino you will be a bit of a ways away from the town and there is car rentals or shuttles you can get at the airport for your stay. Having a car would be ideal because Tofino can also play as your honeymoon spot and you want to be able to drive around. Taxi’s and Ubers are not as easily accessible in this tiny town.

Airport Location: The Tofino Airport is about a 20-minute drive from town. Car rentals or shuttles are available for transport.

Taking the Ferry & Driving is the second option to get to Tofino. For couples craving a scenic road trip experience, taking the ferry to Vancouver Island and driving to Tofino is a classic west coast adventure. There is so many beautiful spots to stop along the way. My personal favourite is to stop at the Old Country Market to laugh at the goats on the roof and grab a donut from Billy G’s Doughnuts. After you get some road snacks the drive up to Tofino has incredible little stopping points in the lush rainforest.

Step 1: Take a BC Ferries sailing from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo (Departure Bay).

Ferry Time: About 1 hour 40 minutes.

You can get out of your vehicle and go onto the ferry and either get a meal at the cafe/restaurant, grab a coffee and go sit up on deck. The view travelling through the passage to Vancouver Island is gorgeous no matter the weather. And like I mentioned there is typically a high chance you will see some whales or porpoise during your travels.

Cost: Roughly $100–$130 CAD for two adults and a vehicle (one-way).

Step 2: Drive from Nanaimo to Tofino via Highway 4.

Drive Time: Approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, passing through Cathedral Grove and scenic mountain roads.

In total, this route takes about 5 to 6 hours, including ferry time, but rewards you with unforgettable sights along the way. It’s ideal if you want to bring your own vehicle, enjoy some flexibility, and take in the journey as part of your elopement story.

There is sometimes highway closures during high seasons due to accidents or construction, so checking the BC highways App will save you getting stuck in it. If you know there’s a bit of a back up. Stop along the way and soak in the journey.

During the months October – End of March you will need snow tires and/or chains on your tires for winter conditions. We do not get a lot of snow, but the coastal snow conditions are so unpredictable and it’s like we have mutant snow here on the West Coast. Best to be prepared.
